Lighter gear, smarter budget
Ultralight backpacking has a reputation problem: the lightest gear is often the most expensive gear, and it can feel like the sport is gatekept by whoever can afford a $600 tent and a $450 quilt.
We don’t think that’s true anymore. The budget ultralight category has gotten genuinely good — better fabrics, smarter designs, and a lot more competition among cottage brands has pushed quality up while keeping prices down. You just have to know where to look, and which “cheap” gear is actually a false economy versus a real deal.
That’s what Ounceology is for.
What we do
We test, compare, and break down backpacking gear with one filter above everything else: does this earn its place in your pack without wrecking your budget. No gear here is chosen because a brand paid for placement — every recommendation is based on genuine research into materials, weight, durability, and real user experience, cross-checked against what actually holds up on trail versus what just photographs well.
We cover:
- Shelters, sleep systems, and packs built for base weights under 15 lbs
- Honest breakdowns of where spending more actually matters, and where it doesn’t
- Beginner-friendly guides for anyone making the jump from traditional backpacking to ultralight
- Straight comparisons — no false ties, no “it depends” cop-outs when a real answer exists
